- George J. “ Handy” Nagel, age 90 of Amana, died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 5, 2011, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Tony Berger officiating. Burial will be in the High Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society or Colonial Manor of Amana. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
George is survived by his son Larry Nagel (Kathleen) of High Amana; two daughters, Sharon Rude (Bob) of Coralville and Mary Lou Reihmann (Bob) of Denver, CO; five grandchildren, John Nagel, Karl Reihmann, Anna Reihmann, Katy Rude and Nicholas Rude; a great-grandchild, Kennen Nagel; and a sister Dorothy Hawkes of High Amana. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Olga in 2005, two brothers, Wallace and Leroy, and two sisters Leona Doehrmann and Ruth Stumpff.
George John Nagel was born July 21, 1920 in Newhall, Iowa, the son of John and Katy Hetz Nagel. He attended the Amana School and married Olga Mary Sloup on June 12, 1955 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. George was employed as a foreman of the Amana Farms, retiring in 1985. He was very devoted to his wife and his family.
George was a member of the Amana Church Society and the Amana Young Men’s Bureau. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was an avid Cubs fan. George enjoyed all animals and nature, and liked to feed the birds and go fishing. He was known to be able to fix anything, hence his nickname “Handy”.
