Dr. Michael Richard Schmid, 60, died on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at his home, following a courageous battle with leukemia.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway, with the Rev. Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial will be in East Amana Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Blairstown American Legion. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 16, at the church, where there will be a vigil service at 7 p.m. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, is in charge of arrangements.
He was born on Oct. 14, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, son of Richard and Lorraine Lippmann Schmid. He married Kathy Roe on Jan. 3, 1970, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway.
Mike was a physician's assistant with the Army, retiring as a captain in 1994, after serving 23 years. Mike was a Desert Storm veteran and was awarded many medals during his service, including the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. He was most proud of his Ranger tab. He then worked with Dr. David Field at Westside Orthopedics in Dubuque, retiring in 2010.
Mike was a member of the MJ Kirby Post 170, Blairstown American Legion.
Mike loved to hunt, fish, read, golf and spend time with his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and made everyone around him laugh. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and proud soldier. He left a lasting impression on each person he met. Mike loved to learn and earned his master's and PhD after his military retirement.
Surviving are his wife, Kathy; three children, Katie (Chris) Yaroch, of Kingston, Tenn., Trish Schmid, of Middle Amana, and Michael Richard Schmid II; his mother, Lorraine Schmid, of East Amana, and special friend, Ralph Zuber; a grandson, Cole Michael Schmid-McCormick; two sisters, Michele (Steve) Meyer, of Blairstown, and Mary Schmid, of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and a great-niece, Zoey. |
