- Arthur W. Selzer, 88, died Thursday, June 24, 2004, in Colonial Manor Care Center, Middle Amana, following a brief illness. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, by Elder Harold Pitz. Burial: Homestead Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Arrangements with Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
Memorials may be donated to the Amana Church Society or the Amana Heritage Society.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Hoehnle and husband Charles of Homestead and Kathryn Johnson and husband Glen of Barrington, Ill.; two grandsons, Peter and Sam Hoehnle of Homestead; and a granddaughter, Anne Marie Leake and husband Timothy of Rockford, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie in 1999; his parents, and a brother, Carl.
Arthur Willard Selzer was born April 17, 1916, in Homestead, the son of Louis and Caroline (Schaup) Selzer. He received his education in the Homestead school and was employed by the Homestead Farm Department. During the 1930s he hauled tractors, coal, wool and refrigeration units for the Amana Society. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy, serving at Fort Pierce, Fla., and the South Pacific. He married Marie Stuck on March 19, 1946. Following the war, Arthur returned to work on the Homestead Farm, becoming manager in 1955. From 1961 until retirement in 1983, he was employed by Amana Refrigeration in the postal and advertising departments.
Art was a founding member of the Amana Refrigeration Retirees, a guide for the Amana Heritage Museum, a greeter for the ACCVB, and a member of the Amana Society Board of Directors for 16 years, including a term as vice president. He was a life member of the Elks, Homestead Welfare Club, Amana Heritage Society and Amana Church Society. He was an avid photographer, letter writer and amateur historian. He traveled and took an interest in family activities. He had an upbeat attitude and his "goodbye" for years was to tell people, "Have a happy day!" [3]
